Female employees at Kenya Brown’s cheese factory were forced to disrobe over a used sanitary pad.
Three individuals have been apprehended following allegations of a disturbing incident at a cheese factory in Kenya, where female employees were reportedly coerced into undressing to identify who was menstruating. According to an official, a manager at Brown’s Food Company convened a group of female workers in an attempt to ascertain the culprit responsible for disposing of a used sanitary towel in an incorrect bin. When her initial efforts to extract a confession proved futile, she resorted to demanding that the women disrobe.
The accused manager has been suspended by Brown’s Food Company pending an investigation into the matter. Local law enforcement in Limuru disclosed that three individuals were being charged with indecent assault in connection with the incident. Senator Gloria Orwoba received a distress call regarding the occurrence and took to Facebook to shed light on the situation. Senator Orwoba, who advocates against period shaming, explained that the manager discovered the used sanitary towel in a bin not designated for such disposal. Unable to identify the responsible party, the manager insisted on determining who was menstruating in order to administer punishment.
Despite Senator Orwoba’s intervention attempts, the company was unable to resolve the issue with its employees. Brown’s Food Company expressed sadness over the incident and emphasised that it did not align with the company’s overall procedures in a statement on its website. Local authorities conducted a thorough investigation, obtaining statements from the victims prior to apprehending the three suspects. The police chief for the area, Philip Mwania, warned other employers who engage in such demeaning and shaming practises that justice would soon be served for their victims. Similar incidents of this nature have reportedly occurred at other companies within the region.
Period shaming is a significant problem in Kenya, as campaigners have highlighted. Senator Orwoba herself faced an incident related to menstruation when she was compelled to leave parliament in February due to an apparent blood stain on her trousers.
