Hospital fire killed ten infants in Maharashtra, PM Modi expresses his grief
Ten newborns died in Maharashtra due to a fire that broke out in the hospital at 2 am.
17 infants were admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of a hospital in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district. The Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) was located on the 4th floor of the building and when the fire broke out 7 babies in the inborn ward of the unit were rescued but sadly the 10 infants in the outbound ward couldn’t be saved.
PM Modi expressed his grief towards the incident and called it a ‘Heart-wrenching tragedy’.
Sharing a tweet Prime Minister Modi wrote, “Heart-wrenching tragedy in Bhandara, Maharashtra, where we have lost precious young lives. My thoughts are with all the bereaved families. I hope the injured recover as early as possible.”
Pramod Khandate, District civil surgeon said “Our staff extinguished the fire as soon as they could. The smoke led to the babies suffocating.”
The reason for the fire outbreak is believed to be a short circuit. However, the actual cause is still not known.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray ordered a probe into the incident and talk to the health minister of state.
“As I have been told, a short circuit caused the fire. The staff – nurses, ward boys – saved seven babies. Seven newborns died due to suffocation, and three others died due to the blaze,” said Health Minister Rajesh Tope.
