Samsung overtakes Apple to reclaim the top rank in the global smartphone market.
According to a new survey, Samsung Electronics reclaimed the top spot in the worldwide smartphone market from Apple in the first quarter of this year.
Samsung was the only top-five smartphone brand to rise quarter-on-quarter, despite shipments falling 3% year over year.
Between January and March, the South Korean electronics behemoth shipped 74 million cellphones.
According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung’s market share increased to 23% from 19% in the previous quarter, putting it ahead of Apple in Q1 2022.
Apple shipped 59 million products in the first quarter, down 1% year over year. This followed a 28 per cent drop in quarterly shipment volume for the season, which was expected.
According to a report released late Friday, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo’s component issues persisted, resulting in quarterly and annual shipment declines.
In Q1 2022, the worldwide smartphone market shrank by 7% YoY, shipping 328 million devices.
Continuous component shortages, as well as COVID’s resurgence at the start of the quarter and the Russia-Ukraine war near the end, all contributed to the fall.
“Despite a late flagship introduction, Samsung appears to have addressed component shortages that impacted its supply last year, as indicated by a higher-than-expected increase in its sales,” said senior analyst Harmeet Singh Walia.
While component shortages are projected to alleviate shortly, the Russia-Ukraine conflict poses a fresh hurdle to the global smartphone market’s recovery.
“However, if the war leads to a decrease in raw material availability, a rise in costs, increasing inflationary pressure, and/or other vendors leaving Russia, the war’s impact may have broader ramifications,” said Jan Stryjak, research director.
