The Welsh Musician Behind the Iconic Sopranos Theme Reveals a Startling Secret
Renowned for its portrayal of a New Jersey mafia dynasty, “The Sopranos” captivated audiences worldwide, becoming an iconic television series. Yet, amidst its acclaim, few may realise that the show’s unforgettable theme tune was crafted by a musician from the valleys of South Wales. Larry Love, frontman of Alabama 3, discloses a surprising revelation as the US hit commemorates its 25th anniversary: he has never watched a single episode of the series.
Love, whose real name is Rob Spragg, candidly admits his reluctance stems not from the show’s content but from his aversion to hearing his own music. Despite penning the track “Woke Up This Morning,” which became synonymous with the gritty underworld depicted in “The Sopranos,” Love confesses to avoiding the series out of self-critique and perfectionism.
The genesis of this unlikely collaboration traces back to a 10-minute acid house track featuring blues samples, which eventually evolved into the seminal song. Initially met with modest success, “Woke Up This Morning” caught the attention of “Sopranos” creator David Chase, who recognised its thematic resonance with the show’s narrative.
Chase’s serendipitous encounter with the track on the New Jersey turnpike paved the way for its inclusion in the series, despite initial misconceptions about the band’s origins. Love recounts Chase’s amusement upon learning the truth, noting the unexpected synergy between Welsh musicians and the American mafia milieu.
Although initially offered a nominal fee for the track, ongoing royalties have provided stability for Love and his bandmates, allowing them to persevere in the music industry. Reflecting on their unconventional fusion of country-western and techno influences, Love acknowledges the risks taken during the Britpop era but takes pride in their enduring success.
Now approaching 60, Love remains undeterred, gearing up for live performances across the UK and a reimagined remix of “Woke Up This Morning.” Embracing his identity as a rock and roll artist, Love looks ahead with enthusiasm, undeterred by age and fueled by a lifelong passion for music.
