11th February although seems like an ordinary day, but it has significance in the life of women related to science. It is The International Day of Women and Girls in Science. 

11th February is a day dedicated to celebrating the contribution of women and girls in the field of science. The main theme of this year is “Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19.

COVID-19 has been a hard time for everyone especially for the female scientists who are at the early stages of their careers. 

The pandemic has impacted the existing gender gap in science fields negatively. The year focuses on the theme “Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19” because of the negative impact it had on the young female scientist’s career.

Gender inequality is high in the science field and the United Nations wants to address the issue and fight against it. The United Nations wants to make science accessible and approachable for all genders. 

2021 will mark the 6th International Day of Women and Girls in Science Assembly. The event will be held virtually.

It is a step towards the 2030 Development Agenda goal and 17 global goals. The theme of the 6th International Day of Women and Girls in Science Assembly will be Beyond the Borders: Equality in Science for Society. 

Currently, the numbers of women in the research field are less than 30 percent. The theme aims to focus on the value of the social aspects and cultural dimensions in Science, Technology, and Innovation to enhance sustainable development programs.
