According to the government, big cities would be the first to acquire 5G in 2022
The Department of Transportation asked the telecom sector regulator TRAI for advice on the reserve price, band plan, block size, and quantity of spectrum to be auctioned in September of this year.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced that metros and major cities such as Gurugram, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Pune will be the first to receive 5G services next year.
The government plans to hold spectrum auctions for 5G in March-April 2022. The Department of Transportation asked the telecom sector regulator TRAI for advice on the reserve price, band plan, block size, and quantity of spectrum to be auctioned in September of this year. TRAI, for its part, has begun talks with industry stakeholders on the matter.
Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea have set up 5G trial sites in Gurugram, Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jamnagar, Ahmadabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Pune, and Gandhi Nagar. Next year, the country’s first 5G services will be launched in these metros and major cities.
Experts have stressed the importance of regulatory certainty when it comes to 5G deployment.
“Right now, the most important thing that needs to be clarified is on the regulatory side.” It involves the licencing of the spectrum to make it available and on fair and acceptable conditions. Each country must establish what it is specifically. The question of whether spectrum pricing is too high has been debated. And I believe some things can be done to ensure that funds are available to expand coverage for Indians.” said Magnus Ewerbring, Ericsson’s chief technology officer for the Asia Pacific, in an interview with The Indian Express recently.
“5G will move at a dizzying pace as soon as it becomes available.” The gadgets, as well as the service providers, are prepared. “We need clarity on what frequency bands and other terms and circumstances,” he continued.
