India’s Shreyas Iyer hospitalised with lacerated spleen

India batter Shreyas Iyer is recovering in hospital after suffering a lacerated spleen while fielding during the third One-Day International against Australia in Sydney on Saturday.

The 30-year-old sustained the injury in the 34th over while running backwards to take a catch that dismissed Alex Carey, landing heavily on his side. Iyer immediately clutched his ribs in pain and received on-field treatment before being taken to hospital for further assessment.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Monday that Iyer is “medically stable” and “recovering well,” though no timeline has been given for his return.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney,” the BCCI said in a statement. “Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”

Despite Iyer’s injury, India cruised to a nine-wicket win in the match but lost the three-match series 2–1.

The teams are set to meet again on Wednesday in Canberra for the first of five T20 internationals.
