Eight people were killed in a gun shooting in a mall in Texas
Federal investigators are looking into whether the shooter who killed eight individuals, including kids, at a mall in Dallas has ties to the far right. Mauricio Garcia, 33, has been identified as the assailant who was shot dead by a policeman on the site.
He had a patch on his shirt during the attack that read “Right Wing Death Squad” with the letters RWDS. “White supremacy organisations” and “right-wing extremists” frequently use this word.
The shooter was wearing combat gear while using an AR-15-style rifle, and many rounds of ammo were discovered on him.
When the shooter exited his car in a mall parking lot and started firing on customers, eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and despair.
A police officer responding to another incident who happened to be nearby stopped the attack.
Two of the victims died later in the hospital, but six people were declared dead at the location in the north Dallas suburbs.
On Sunday, at least three injured people were still fighting for their lives.
The attack has been called “the newest act of violence with guns to devastate this country” by President Joe Biden.
The political rivals of the Republican Party were once again urged by the president to accept stricter gun laws.
Gregg Abbott, the Republican governor of Texas, said on Fox News Sunday that rather than considering broader prohibitions, his priority is to deal with a growing mental health crisis and criminals’ access to guns. At the time of the shooting, Garcia was apparently employed as a security guard and had no significant criminal history.
A video appeared to show the man getting out of his car in the mall parking lot and suddenly opening fire on people walking nearby.
