Elon Musk Condemns Arson for Disrupting Tesla’s Berlin Factory
Elon Musk expressed strong disapproval of an apparent arson attack that disrupted operations at Tesla’s Berlin car factory, branding it “dumb.” Allegedly targeting the site due to its resource-intensive operations, a far-left activist group claimed responsibility for the sabotage.
The disruption is anticipated to extend until the following week, incurring substantial costs in the high nine-digit euro range for the company. Tesla is actively pursuing an expansion of its German factory, a move that has encountered resistance from environmentalists concerned about its environmental impact.
Taking to the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Musk condemned the attack as “extremely stupid,” questioning the motives driving it. He suggested that the perpetrators might lack genuine environmental objectives or serve as pawns for those with questionable agendas.
In an online declaration, activists identifying as the Volcano Group admitted to sabotaging production by setting fire to an electricity pylon near the plant, resulting in power outages in the vicinity. Despite the disruption, Tesla reassured stakeholders that its facility remained secure.
While the fire did not directly affect the factory, it inflicted damage on the electricity pylon and high-voltage cables. The Volcano Group criticised Tesla for its resource consumption, alleged groundwater contamination, and excessive water usage.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident, with Brandenburg’s Interior Minister vowing severe repercussions for the sabotage. The expansion plan faces opposition from environmentalists, primarily due to concerns about potential tree felling near the site.
Approximately 100 protesters have set up camp in a nearby forest, although they have distanced themselves from the arson. Tesla’s current production rate stands at 500,000 cars annually, with plans to double output, a goal now facing delays and financial repercussions due to the attack.
