‘Glacier burst is a phrase I was unfamiliar with’ said Anand Mahindra on Uttarakhand Glacier burst

Anand Mahindra, Chairman & Team member of Mahindra Group shared a video of the Uttarakhand Glacier burst and captioned that the phrase was new to him. He also expressed his condolence in the tweet and highlighted the concerns of climate activists regarding climate change. 

He wrote, “Glacier burst is a phrase I was unfamiliar with but which, unfortunately, I think we all will get overly familiar with. This is what climate activists have been warning us about. The dangerous future they alerted us to may already be here.”

A massive glacial burst in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on Sunday morning.  Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers are flooding because of it and the glacier burst also leads to an avalanche. 

Reports suggested that the avalanche was near the Rishiganga Power Project and the areas near the Dhauliganga river got flooded. 

Thousands of people were immediately evacuated from the surrounding areas. The flood due to glacier burst has destroyed several houses near the Rishiganga power project. 

Hundreds of ITBP personnel are present there for rescue missions. 

“Some water bodies flooded and destroyed many river bank-side houses due to cloudburst or breaching of the reservoir. Casualties are feared and hundreds of ITBP personnel rushed for rescue,” said an ITBP official.

Earlier the state chief minister, Trivendra Singh Rawat tweeted “A disaster was reported at Raini village at around 1045 am, affecting two dam sites in Chamoli. Immediate instructions were issued to take stock of the situation and take emergency measures. Simultaneously, the state’s disaster response mechanism was activated. #Uttarakhand”

He went to an on-spot inspection of the conditions and later gave a press conference sharing all the important details to the public and press. He also thanked the media to contain the spread of any kind of rumors.
