‘GPUs are Melting’: OpenAI Limits ChatGPT’s Image Generation After Viral Ghibli Trend

OpenAI Faces GPU Overload Due to Ghibli-Style Image Requests

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that the company is temporarily limiting image generation in ChatGPT after a viral trend overwhelmed its computing resources. Users have been creating Studio Ghibli-style AI images, leading to high GPU usage, which Altman described as “melting.”

To manage the surge in demand, ChatGPT’s free tier will soon be limited to three image generations per day, while OpenAI works on optimizing performance.

What is the Ghibli Image Trend?

The trend involves users transforming their portraits and images into Studio Ghibli’s signature animation style using ChatGPT’s native image generation tool. OpenAI’s tool has allowed users to create and edit images effortlessly, with the Ghibli aesthetic gaining massive popularity on social media. Even Altman changed his profile picture to a Ghibli-style version.

However, this surge in demand has put significant pressure on OpenAI’s GPU infrastructure, leading to slower response times and temporary restrictions on image generation.

Who Can Access OpenAI’s Image Generation Tool?

OpenAI initially launched the feature for Plus, Pro, Team, and Free users. However, Altman confirmed that the free-tier rollout has been delayed due to resource constraints.

Additionally, OpenAI is also updating GPT-4o, enhancing its capabilities in coding, instruction following, and general responsiveness.

As OpenAI works to resolve the technical challenges, users may experience delays, but Altman reassured that improvements are on the way.
