Huddersfield Giants defeat Wakefield Trinity, widening the gap to relegation
Wakefield’s hopes of remaining in the Super League took a hit as they suffered a resounding defeat against an improving Huddersfield team. Despite winning three of their previous four matches and reentering the competition, Trinity found themselves trailing 16-0 at halftime. The hosts, Huddersfield, took complete control with tries from Chris McQueen, Kevin Naiqama, and Sam Halsall. In the second half, Jermaine McGillvary and Tui Lolohea quickly extended Huddersfield’s lead. Although Samisoni Langi scored a try for Wakefield, Lolohea added his second to secure a comprehensive victory for the Giants.
Having endured a four-game losing streak in June, including a humbling 54-0 defeat to Leeds, Huddersfield themselves had been in danger of falling into trouble. However, their surprise win against league leaders Catalans last week, followed by their dominant performance against Wakefield, has put them eight points clear of their opponents.
Wakefield remain at the bottom of the league standings after their loss, two points behind local rivals Castleford, who will face Hull FC on Saturday. Huddersfield took an early lead through McQueen’s try just four minutes into the game. Jake O’Connor played a pivotal role in the two scores before halftime, setting up Naiqama’s try and providing the field position for Halsall’s try with a well-executed 40/20 kick.
McGillvary showcased his experience by scoring in the corner after the restart, and Lolohea’s two tries, sandwiched between Samisoni’s try for Wakefield, sealed a well-deserved victory for Huddersfield.
Huddersfield, under Ian Watson’s leadership, will aim to build on these consecutive wins when they face Hull FC at home on Thursday, July 27. Wakefield, led by Mark Applegarth, will host Warrington on Sunday, July 30, who have now suffered five consecutive losses in the Super League.
