Lewandowski’s two-pointer gives Barcelona, a 2-4 English team, the championship.
Barcelona won the “La Liga championship” for the first time since 2018-19 with four games left to play and a fantastic win over their city rivals, Espanyol. After Robert Lewandowski’s 20th league goal of the season and another goal from 19-year-old Alejandro Balde, Barca led 3-0 at the break.
Before Lewandowski added the third, Jules Kounde’s header brought the score to 4-0.
Espanyol did reduce the deficit thanks to Javier Puado and Joselu, but they are still having trouble and are very near the bottom of the standings.
With 12 points still up for grabs, Barcelona has 85 points, 14 more than its closest rival, Real Madrid.
Since club legend Lionel Messi left in August 2021 and Xavi was named manager in November 2021, this is their first “La Liga championship.”
After suffering their ninth league loss in 11 games, Espanyol is in danger of being demoted from “La Liga” for the second time in four seasons.
Barcelona’s players celebrated after the final whistle before making a quick exit to the locker room as some Espanyol supporters sprinted onto the field. They will have to wait to receive the trophy.
After losing 3-1 to Real Madrid away on October 16 and exiting the Champions League after losing three of their six group games, Barca was three points behind Real Madrid. But in his first full season in charge, Xavi, who enjoyed an illustrious 17-year playing career with Barca’s first team and won eight “La Liga championships,” has succeeded.
Sergio Busquets, Barcelona’s captain, revealed he would leave the team at the end of the current campaign after spending 18 years there.
Even though this is the 34-year-old’s ninth league championship with Barca, the team’s future appears bright thanks to goals from Balde and Kounde, who are now wearing the colours of Barcelona for the first time in La Liga.
Next season, Barcelona will leave their Nou Camp home while the stadium is being renovated.
But the club’s final two home games, against Real Sociedad on Saturday and Mallorca on May 28, will give supporters a chance to celebrate their first significant trophy since 2020–21.
