Mason Mount to join Manchester United from Chelsea; deal agreed
Manchester United and Chelsea have reached an agreement for the transfer of Mason Mount, the talented England midfielder, to United. The deal entails a five-year contract for Mount, who will join United for a fee of £55 million, with an additional £5 million in add-ons. This move marks Erik ten Hag’s first signing of the summer as he aims to bolster his squad after United secured qualification for the upcoming season’s Champions League.
Chelsea, having spent a substantial £600 million in the previous season, needed to offload players before the end of June to address concerns regarding Financial Fair Play regulations. While Chelsea initially rejected United’s initial three bids, discussions between the clubs recently resumed to break the deadlock. Although Chelsea preferred to retain Mount, they were unsuccessful in negotiating a new contract with him as his existing deal was set to expire next year.
During his time at Chelsea, Mount, who joined the club at the age of six, has made 195 appearances and scored 33 goals since his senior debut in 2019. However, he missed the end of the recent domestic season due to injury, coinciding with Chelsea’s disappointing 12th-place finish, their lowest in over 25 years.
United, who finished third in the Premier League, had initially prioritised the signing of a new striker this summer. Nevertheless, Mount’s versatility in advanced positions proved appealing to the club’s management.
Mount has achieved significant success in his career, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2021 with Chelsea, where he started in their 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the final. He has also lifted the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup with the Blues.
Following the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea’s new manager, the club is aiming to trim its squad size. They have already sold Kai Havertz to Arsenal and Mateo Kovacic to Manchester City, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek is on the verge of joining AC Milan.
Additionally, Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly have moved to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli, and N’Golo Kante has agreed to terms with Al-Ittihad, another Saudi Pro League team. Midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko has also left Chelsea as a free agent after spending last season on loan at AC Milan.
