Raye breaks the Brit Awards record with seven nominations in 2024
British singer-songwriter Raye has made history by receiving seven nominations for the Brit Awards in a single year, surpassing the previous record jointly held by Craig David, Gorillaz, and Robbie Williams. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Raye, who faced challenges in releasing her debut album independently in 2021.
Raye’s nominations include the prestigious Artist of the Year category, where six out of the 10 nominees are female. This contrasts with the previous year, which faced criticism for an all-male Best Artist lineup after merging male and female categories. In response to the feedback, Brits organisers expanded the Artist of the Year category from five to 10 slots.
The international Artist of the Year category also showcases female dominance, with Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo among the eight female nominees in a 10-strong category. Notably, high-profile male artists such as Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi were absent from the Artist of the Year and Album of the Year categories but received nominations for Song of the Year.
Raye’s nominations extend across various categories, including Best Album, Best New Artist, Best Pop Act, and two in the Best Song category for “Escapism” and “Prada.” Her success reflects a turning point for the south London singer, who defied industry challenges to secure seven Brit nominations.
In terms of overall nominations, 55% feature women, either as solo acts or part of all-female groups, rising to 57% when mixed-gender groups are included. YolanDa Brown, chair of the music industry body, the BPI, expressed joy at the diverse representation in the nominees.
The Rolling Stones received their first Brit nomination in a decade in the Best Rock Act category, which will be voted on via Instagram. A new genre category, Best R&B Act, has been introduced this year alongside existing categories for alternative/rock, dance, pop, and hip-hop/grime/rap.
Dua Lipa is the first artist confirmed to perform at the Brit Awards ceremony on March 2, 2024. The voting body, comprising approximately 1,300 members from across the music industry, contributes to the selection of winners in various categories.
