Singaporean Man Arrested in Japan Over Alleged Incident at Hot Spring

Japanese authorities have arrested a 55-year-old Singaporean man in connection with an alleged incident involving a teenage boy at a hot spring inn in Niigata Prefecture.
The incident reportedly occurred on 14 May at an onsen facility in Tagami town, where the man is accused of inappropriately touching the boy multiple times despite the minor’s resistance. A complaint was filed by a relative of the boy, leading police to apprehend the suspect at Niigata Station two days later.
The man, who was visiting Japan as a tourist, has denied any wrongdoing. According to local reports, he told investigators that he only placed his hand on the boy’s left shoulder to steady himself while exiting the bath and claimed he did not commit any indecent act.
The case has sparked attention due to the setting, as Japan’s public bathhouses—known as onsens—are deeply rooted in cultural tradition and are frequented by both locals and tourists.
Police have launched a full investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the allegations. As of now, no formal charges have been announced.
