Swedish football player Zlatan Ibrahimovic retired at the age of 41.
Swedish professional football player Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who plays as a striker for Series A club AC Milan, took his retirement at the age of 41.
He played his last match on Sunday and announced to the San Siro crowd, “I’m saying goodbye to football, but not for my fans.”
He had already made an announcement about leaving the Italian Club.
He amassed 511 goals for clubs like Manchester United, both Inter and AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain, and he won league championships in four different nations.
After helping AC Milan win the Scudetto in 2011 and the title again the previous year, Ibrahimovic started his second stint with them in early 2020.
Due to a string of ailments, he only started one game and played four times for the Serie A team this season, scoring one goal in the process. His contract was slated to expire this month.
Ibrahimovic was nominated for the “Ballon d’Or” 11 times during his century-long career, which saw him win 34 trophies, including 14 league titles.
The Champions League was the only significant club trophy he had yet to win, and the 2017 Europa League was his only triumph on the continent while playing for Manchester United.
In addition, the striker retires as Sweden’s all-time leading scorer with 62 goals in 122 games for his country.
After Euro 2016, he left the national team, but he came back in 2021 for their unsuccessful “World Cup” qualifying campaign.
After making his announcement, he told reporters, “I used to be scared when journalists asked me about my future, but now I can accept it; I’m ready.
“This is what I’ve always done. I became a man thanks to football. It made it possible for me to get to know people I never would have. Football has allowed me to travel the world, and football is entirely to cherish.
