“The Band’s” leader, Robbie Robertson, passes away at 80 years old.

Robbie Robertson, the renowned guitarist and songwriter of “The Band,” has passed away at the age of 80.

According to his manager, “he succumbed on Wednesday, surrounded by family, after a prolonged illness.” “The Band,” a highly influential group during the late 1960s, became the subject of Martin Scorsese’s 1978 film “The Last Waltz,” chronicling their final concert.

Famous for composing hits like “The Weight” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” Robertson was born Jaime Royal Robertson in Toronto in 1943. He ventured into a music career at 16. In addition to their own music, The Band notably served as Bob Dylan’s backing band before gaining recognition with their 1968 debut album, “Music From Big Pink.”

Throughout the 1970s, they released a series of well-received albums. After their last full-band performance in 1976, the group reformed without Robertson for tours and studio releases in the 1980s and 1990s. Robertson and keyboardist Garth Hudson were the only surviving members of The Band’s classic lineup.

Beyond their musical contributions, Robertson collaborated with Scorsese on soundtracks for notable films like 1980’s “Raging Bull” and 2019’s “The Irishman.” Scorsese praised Robertson as a “giant” and a constant presence in his life and work, acknowledging the profound impact he made on the art form.

The news of Robertson’s passing prompted tributes from peers. Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood expressed sadness over the loss of his “lovely” and “great” friend. Stevie Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band remembered Robertson as both an “underrated brilliant guitar player” and a close companion.

Canadian singer Bryan Adams shared a photo of Robertson, expressing gratitude for his incredible music and memorable moments. In the wake of his departure, Robertson’s contributions to the music industry and his influence on fellow artists remain a lasting legacy.
