The “super mother” tigress from India was no ordinary huge cat. Collarwali, one of the country’s most famous tigers, died over the weekend at the age of 16. She was instrumental in transforming the fortunes of the sanctuary where she lived, the Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, the central state.

She was named after the radio collar she wore and gave birth to 29 cubs in eight litters during her lifespan, according to one expert, a “prolific” legacy.

Collarwali died on Saturday evening as a result of age-related difficulties.

Naturalists, forest officers, and wildlife photographers reminisce about an animal they saw grow up in the reserve’s woodlands, which are thought to have inspired Rudyard Kipling’s classic The Jungle Book.

T-15 was born in 2005, and her mother, “badi mata,” or “large mother,” was also a well-known tigress. T-1 was her father’s name.

Collarwali (the one with a collar) earned her name as she was the first tigress in the park to be fitted with a radio collar, allowing her to be studied for several years.

According to Mohammed Rafique Sheikh, a naturalist who grew up on the reserve’s doorstep, Collarwali rarely disappoints Pench visitors.

According to the most recent government estimate, India is home to more than 70% of the world’s tigers, whose numbers had been declining but have since risen to 2,976. Thousands of people visit India’s 51 tiger reserves each year in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the gorgeous animal.

Collarwali was cremated on the reserve’s open ground on Sunday after flowers and prayers were provided by employees, naturalists, and local residents.

“Beloved Collarwali,” the words appear on screen in a video obituary prepared by reserve personnel, which begins with footage of her reclining in the grass, at ease in her home. That is how her friends and family will remember her.

Even though Collarwali was a one-of-a-kind tiger, Dr. Mishra stated that they were not mourning her death, but rather wished to honour her legacy.
