Madonna cancels her tour following a stay in intensive care.
Madonna’s world tour has been postponed as she was admitted to a hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) due to a severe bacterial infection. Her manager stated that the infection was serious and required her to spend several days in the ICU, but a full recovery is expected. Although Madonna’s health is improving, she is still receiving medical care.
The 64-year-old pop icon was set to embark on an 84-date tour next month, marking the 40th anniversary of her breakout single, “Holiday.” It would have been her first-ever greatest hits tour following her experimental Madame X shows in 2019 and 2020, some of which were cancelled due to knee and hip injuries.
Madonna’s tour was scheduled to begin in Vancouver on July 15 and conclude in Mexico City on January 30. However, her manager announced that all commitments would be paused as a result of the serious bacterial infection she developed on June 24. She was also slated to perform in the UK and Europe starting on October 14.
Madonna’s health matters are typically kept private, but it is likely that she was in the final stages of rehearsals for the tour. In 2009, she earned a Guinness World Record for the highest-grossing music tour by a female artist with her Sticky & Sweet Tour. Forbes magazine estimates her wealth at $580 million and reports that she has earned around $1.2 billion from her tours.
Aside from her music career, Madonna has six children, and she recently took to Instagram to congratulate her 10-year-old twin daughters on completing elementary school. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Madonna moved to New York in 1978 to pursue her passion for dance and music.
Earlier this year, Madonna experienced the loss of her older brother, Anthony Ciccone, who passed away at the age of 66 after struggling with alcoholism and homelessness.
