After Georgia’s arrest, Donald Trump ends his silence on X.
Former President Donald Trump has made a reappearance on the social media platform X, which was formerly known as Twitter, following his surrender on charges related to an alleged plot to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.
Trump’s account had faced a “permanent” suspension in the aftermath of the Capitol riot in January 2021. However, his account was reactivated after Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter last year. Despite this, Trump had refrained from posting on his account until recently.
In his inaugural post on X, Trump shared an image of his mugshot along with the caption “Never Surrender” and a link to his campaign website. Elon Musk, the owner of X, later reposted the content with the additional comment “Next-Level.
Twitter explained its decision to permanently suspend Trump’s account following the January 6, 2021, riot in Washington, DC, expressing concerns about the potential for further incitement of violence.
Since the suspension, Trump has turned to his own social media platform called Truth Social, designed to resemble Twitter. However, Truth Social had not gained significant popularity. Before his suspension from Twitter, it had been the primary platform through which Trump interacted with his followers. He attributed part of his successful presidential campaign to his use of Twitter, emphasising its role in spreading his message effectively.
The absence of Trump from Twitter was viewed by some political analysts as a positive development for him, affording him the opportunity to reorganize without constant public scrutiny. Nevertheless, others believed that for his influence to remain substantial, he required a platform with a wider audience reach compared to Truth Social—a potential role that X could fulfil.
Musk stands to benefit from Trump’s engagement on X, as the former president is known to drive significant online traffic. This could prove crucial for X, which has struggled to generate enough advertising revenue to cover its operational expenses. Within a remarkably short span, Trump’s initial post garnered over 36 million views and 530,000 likes. This event underscores a noteworthy shift in Trump’s digital presence, with potential ramifications for his political influence and the fortunes of the recently acquired X platform.
