Kim Jong Un Threatens “More Offensive Actions” Amid Missile Test
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has issued a warning of “more offensive actions” in response to what he perceives as increasing U.S.-led military threats, following the successful test of the Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missile. Kim’s statement, reported by the official Korean Central News Agency, indicates his confidence in North Korea’s growing missile arsenal. However, experts note that further tests may be needed to prove the capability of missiles targeting the U.S. mainland.
The Hwasong-18 ICBM, a solid-fueled developmental missile, is considered North Korea’s most powerful weapon. Kim, after witnessing the launch, emphasised the need to counter “reckless and irresponsible military threats” with offensive actions. The missile, launched at a high angle to avoid neighbouring countries, covered a distance of 1,002 kilometres for 73.5 minutes, achieving a maximum altitude of 6,518 kilometers.
While Kim expressed “great satisfaction” with the test, analysts like Ankit Panda suggest that this appears to be a signalling exercise and a developmental test, showcasing North Korea’s growing confidence in its solid propellant ICBM. The Hwasong-18 has undergone three tests so far, with the latest marking technical progress but leaving certain challenges, such as warhead targeting and reentry capabilities, unaddressed.
Leif-Eric Easley from Ewha University in Seoul highlights the advancements in North Korea’s missile engine technology but underscores the need for more significant tests in the New Year. Kim’s warning comes in response to perceived confrontational military moves by the U.S. and South Korea, as indicated in recent meetings discussing nuclear deterrence plans and joint drills.
The ongoing tensions prompt South Korea, the U.S., and Japan to share real-time missile warning data on North Korea, enhancing trilateral cooperation to address regional challenges and promote peace. With North Korea’s extensive missile testing programme and the evolving geopolitical landscape, the situation remains dynamic and requires careful monitoring.
