Sunrisers Hyderabad Sets IPL Record with 277-3 Against Mumbai Indians
Sunrisers Hyderabad achieved a remarkable feat in the Indian Premier League (IPL), posting a staggering total of 277-3, the highest in IPL history, leading to a historic 31-run triumph over Mumbai Indians.
The incredible innings saw opener Travis Head smashing 62 off just 24 balls, complemented by Abhishek Sharma’s rapid 63 off 23 deliveries and Heinrich Klaasen’s unbeaten 80 from 34 balls. This remarkable batting display surpassed the previous IPL record set by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013, when they scored 263-5.
Despite a valiant effort from Mumbai Indians in pursuit of the mammoth total, their innings culminated at 246-5, making the match the highest-scoring T20 encounter in history.
Sunrisers’ exceptional batting performance also earned them the distinction of recording the fourth-highest total in men’s T20 cricket and the highest in a T20 franchise tournament. The record for the highest men’s T20 total is held by Nepal, who scored 314-3 against Mongolia last year. Meanwhile, the previous franchise tournament record was held by Melbourne Stars, who posted 273-2 against Hobart Hurricanes in the Australian Big Bash in 2022.
Travis Head’s explosive innings, which included an 18-ball fifty, laid the foundation for Sunrisers’ monumental total. Abhishek Sharma’s blistering fifty, achieved in just 21 balls, further propelled the team’s score, before he departed with Sunrisers at 161-3. The partnership between Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen injected further momentum into Sunrisers’ innings, adding 75 runs in the last five overs to reach an imposing total.
Mumbai Indians displayed resilience in their chase, with Tilak Varma’s spirited 64 from 34 balls keeping their hopes alive. However, Sunrisers’ skipper Pat Cummins’ crucial wicket of Varma, coupled with a disciplined 15th over conceding just three runs, tilted the game in Sunrisers’ favor, ultimately securing their historic victory.
The match witnessed a flurry of boundaries and sixes, with Sunrisers’ innings featuring 18 sixes and 19 fours, contributing to a T20 record of 38 sixes in the match overall. Despite Mumbai Indians’ commendable effort, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s record-breaking batting performance etched its name in IPL history.
