Zomato unveils the inaugural crowd-supported weather infrastructure in India.
On May 8th, Zomato’s co-founder and CEO, Deepinder Goyal, announced India’s inaugural crowd-supported weather infrastructure, aimed at providing real-time updates on temperature, rainfall, and other meteorological data.
Goyal revealed that Weatherunion.com, a proprietary network comprising over 650 on-ground weather stations, would constitute the country’s largest private infrastructure of its kind. This network spans 45 major cities and is slated for further expansion.
“These weather stations, developed by Zomato, offer localized, real-time information on critical weather parameters like temperature, humidity, wind speed, and rainfall,” stated Goyal in a post on the X platform.
The platform will be accessible free of charge. “We are now granting free access to this data (via an API) to all institutions and companies in the country. Yes, it’s really free. We believe that this data is too valuable to withhold or monetize. Therefore, as a Zomato Giveback, we’re providing access to this data for the public good.”
Goyal emphasized that real-time weather data could enhance productivity and stimulate economic growth for companies and institutions. Zomato developed this infrastructure to ensure access to accurate, real-time weather data for making informed business decisions. The platform was created in collaboration with CAS- IIT Delhi, and Zomato anticipates further partnerships. Goyal, an alumnus of IIT-Delhi, also mentioned that volunteers could offer space on their premises for installing weather stations.
“Moreover, many Zomato employees have hosted weather stations at their residences. As we strive to expand this infrastructure further, we welcome volunteers who are willing to provide us space on their premises for installing these weather stations and contributing to nation-building,” added the Zomato CEO.
