A new lead emerges in the AC/DC manager’s death after a 30-year investigation.
New evidence has emerged in the investigation into the death of Crispin Dye, the former manager of the Australian rock band AC/DC. Crispin passed away at the age of 41 on Christmas Day in 1993 after being found with severe head injuries in a Sydney suburb. Recent forensic analysis has revealed a new person of interest, referred to as NP252, whose DNA was found on Crispin’s jeans as well as at another crime scene. The discovery of this DNA match has reignited the focus on Crispin’s alleged murder and prompted a reexamination of potential gay hate crimes in New South Wales.
During the inquiry, it was revealed that Crispin’s clothing was never subjected to forensic examination following his death. Also discovered were two pieces of paper in his pocket, one stained with blood and the other containing a name. Surprisingly, these items were never analysed for fingerprints or DNA, which could have provided valuable information about the assailant.
NP252, the newly identified person of interest, reportedly had a criminal history and had previously been convicted of assault charges. However, the exact role NP252 played in Crispin’s death remains unclear.
Counsel Meg O’Brien, assisting the inquiry, expressed concern over the neglect of potential evidence such as the pieces of paper. She stressed that this evidence could have shed light on the identity of the assailant or assailants and lamented that it had remained untouched for nearly three decades without being examined.
Crispin Dye had been socialising with friends on the night of the incident in 1993. After leaving a hotel in Surry Hills, he was attacked and robbed. A witness described three young males, possibly of Pacific Islander appearance, standing over Crispin’s unconscious body before fleeing the scene. Crispin was taken to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. While some speculated that the attack was a hate crime, the police classified it as a robbery due to the area’s history of such incidents.
The emergence of new forensic evidence and the identification of a person of interest have prompted renewed interest in the case, bringing hope that long-overlooked leads may finally yield answers about the circumstances surrounding Crispin Dye’s tragic death.
