South African singer Winnie Khumalo dies at 51

South African actress and singer Winnie Khumalo has passed away at 51 after a brief illness, her family confirmed. Known for her contributions to Afropop, Khumalo’s career began in the 1980s, and she also featured in popular South African TV series. She is best remembered for her hit song “Live My Life” and her collaborations with notable artists like the late Brenda Fassie.

Her sister, Tshepi Akeepile, shared that Winnie was hospitalized on Tuesday after an illness, but unfortunately, she was pronounced dead on arrival. The cause of her illness remains unclear.

Khumalo leaves behind a significant musical and television legacy. She released several solo albums and also served as a backup singer to Brenda Fassie. She is survived by her daughter, singer Rethabile Khumalo, and son, Thabo Khumalo.

Fans and fellow celebrities have paid tribute on social media, expressing their shock and sadness. Kalawa Jazmee Records, with whom Khumalo worked, hailed her as a “true icon” whose talent and passion have left an everlasting impact on the music industry and her fans.
