According to sources at the presidential palace, Bolsonaro experienced abdominal pain at night and was admitted to a hospital in Brasilia to investigate the cause of the persistent hiccups, the secretariat said.

He was admitted to the army hospital in the capital city of Brasilia for testing in the early hours of Wednesday, according to Globo.

Mr Bolsonaro was said to be “feeling well” in an initial statement from the president’s office, but hours later an update said the surgeon who operated on the far-right politician after he was stabbed in the abdomen during the 2018 presidential campaign decided to transfer him to Sao Paulo, where he underwent additional tests.

Doctor Antonio Luiz Macedo, the doctor responsible for surgeries on Bolsonaro following a knife attack in 2018, found an intestinal obstruction and decided to take him to a hospital in São Paulo.

The president has been complaining for more than a week about the setback, saying it caused him difficulty when speaking in public. On Tuesday evening, he raised the issue in an interview with supporters. “Guys, I’m speechless, guys. If I start talking too much, the hiccups come back. The hiccups are back,” he said.

A photo was posted on Mr Bolsonaro’s Twitter account of him lying on a hospital bed, eyes closed.

The caption said: “We’ll be back soon, God willing. Brazil is ours!”
