The billionaire former chairman of Tata, the nation’s largest corporation, passed away, and according to India’s prime minister, his passing was a “huge loss” for the business community.

On Sunday, Cyrus Mistry was travelling to Mumbai when he was killed in a car accident.

According to police in India’s western Maharastra state, two additional passengers were hurt in addition to one fatality.

After receiving negative reviews for his work, Mr. Mistry, 54, lost his position as chairman of Tata in 2016.

Mr. Mistry had only four years earlier replaced and assumed his position.

The boardroom takeover was shrouded in secrecy, and it gave rise to a protracted legal dispute that culminated in a Tata victory at the hands of India’s top court.

The business, which has operations in more than 100 nations and sells things like steel, salt, and software, generated $130 billion (£110 billion) in revenue in the previous year.

When the accident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, Mr. Mistry and his companions were driving a Mercedes, according to the police.

According to reports, the car struck a divider in the road as it crossed a bridge over a river, and Mr. Mistry was pronounced dead at the site.

Two more, at least, were transported to the hospital.

In a tweet, Mr. Modi referred to Mr. Mistry as a “promising business leader who believed in India’s economic power.”

A police investigation has been requested by the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra state.

The collision highlighted the high number of traffic fatalities in the nation, which in 2021 claimed 150,000 lives, or an average of 18 every hour, according to government statistics.
