Guidelines for Preventing Traumatic Brain Injuries in Children

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) present a significant risk to children, accounting for a substantial portion of disabilities and fatalities among those under 15 years old. Given India’s sizable population within this age bracket, it’s crucial to be vigilant in order to effectively mitigate risks. Falls, sports-related incidents, and motor vehicle accidents are the primary causes of paediatric TBIs, highlighting the critical need for proactive parental interventions.

During an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Jayesh Sardhara and Dr. Rushabh Chheda from Fortis Hospital emphasised the severity of paediatric head injuries. They underscored the importance of promptly evaluating patients using tools such as the Paediatric Glasgow Coma Scale and advanced imaging techniques to inform treatment decisions and prevent potential complications.

TBIs can manifest in various ways, including symptoms like headaches, vomiting, and changes in behavior, indicating the need for prompt medical attention. More severe indicators, such as loss of consciousness and persistent vomiting, require immediate medical intervention. The experts advocate for preventive measures such as ensuring the availability of proper safety gear for sports activities and adhering to correct car seat usage. They also recommend childproofing homes and selecting playgrounds with soft surfaces to enhance precautionary efforts.

In the event of a head injury, parents are advised to promptly cease activities, seek medical aid, and avoid moving the child’s head and spine. Applying firm pressure to any bleeding and initiating CPR, if necessary, are crucial actions. By maintaining vigilance and adhering to safety protocols, parents can significantly reduce the likelihood of paediatric TBIs, thereby safeguarding their children’s well-being and minimising potential risks.
