Nokia the multi-national telecom company has started the production of next-generation 5g equipment at its Chennai plant. Nokia credits itself with the first 5G New Radio in India and its new goal is the production of mMIMO.

“From being the first to manufacture 5G NR in India to producing mMIMO, it demonstrates our innovative manufacturing capabilities and our belief in India’s skill and talent to produce the best-in-class equipment. This will enable us to support Indian Operators as they prepare to launch 5G,” Nokia Senior Vice President and Head of India Market Sanjay Malik said in a statement.

Nokia is now working on the manufacturing of the Air Scale massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (mMIMO) based 5G products. The mMIMO is aimed to have the latest 64-Transmit/64-Receive (64T64R) configuration. The Nokia mMIMO solution has attracted investments worth Rs 600 crore since 2018.

MIMO is a radio technology involving transmitter and receiver. The antenna technology involves wireless communications, multiple antennas are used at both receiver and transmitter end. The purpose of antennas present at each end of the communications circuit is combined to minimize errors and optimize data speed. mMIMO (massive MIMO) is a key factor in 5G technology. It delivers high capacity even in densely populated locations.

Until now, Nokia has manufactured and exported more than 5 million telecom network equipment units. Around 50% of the telecom network equipment has been transported to over 100 countries in the world. “The equipment is already being exported to many countries in advanced stages of 5G deployment. Nokia’s Chennai plant is a significant contributor to the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative to boost domestic manufacturing designed to position India as a manufacturing hub for the latest telecom gear,” said the company.

“Our Chennai factory has emerged as a benchmark of India’s manufacturing capabilities, bringing an entire range of telecom technology to operators in India and the rest of the world……… From being the first to manufacture 5G NR in India to producing mMIMO, it demonstrates our innovative manufacturing capabilities and our belief in India’s skill and talent to produce the best-in-class equipment. This will enable us to support Indian Operators as they prepare to launch 5G,” said Sanjay Malik, the Senior Vice President and Head of India Market at Nokia.

The launch of 5G in India is waiting for the green signal of the spectrum auction. India’s 5g auctions are delayed due to the financial issues of the sector. Although Jio has announced the launch of its 5G network in the second half of 2021 and the Jio networks also claimed that 5G rollout by their company will be powered by the indigenous-developed network, technology components and, hardware.

Many other countries have already accepted 5G. South Korea was the first to adopt the 5G network in the world followed by South Korea, the UK, Germany but still 5G deals of many countries like Japan, Australia, and New Zealand are undecided.

For a long time, Nokia had ruled over the telecom market of India. However, after 2007 the company faced a huge downfall in the Indian market. It failed to sense the change demands of the generation and couldn’t cope well with its competitor. The multinational telecom company which begins as a single paper mill operation has witnessed a huge upsurge and downfall also.

Before manufacturing mobile phones the company has tried its hand over cable, paper products, rubber boots, tires and, televisions. The company is now trying to get back to the business and the 5G rollout can be a bounce-back for the company.
