Mumbai-based comedian Munawar Faruqui was arrested on 1 Dec because of a complaint filed against him by Eklavya Gaur. Eklavya is the son of BJP leader and alleges that Faruqui made derogatory remarks on Hindu deities and Amit shah.

Eklavya went to a show of Faruqi and then accused him of mocking Hindu gods and goddesses and later on the comedian was beaten by the Hindutva mob and arrested by the police under Sections 295-A, 298, 269, 188 & 34 of the IPC.

He said, “When I heard about Munawar’s show, I bought a ticket and went to see it. As expected, he was insulting Hindu deities and also mocked Home Minister Amit Shah by dragging his name with Godhra riots.”

However, after 2 days of his arrest Police said that they don’t have any evidence that proof Faruqui was mocking Hindu gods.

Many popular figures have come out in support of Faruqi.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor also came out in his support.
He said, “This @munawar0018 episode shames us all. As a democracy; as a country mature enough to enjoy a laugh; as a society that does not discriminate on the basis of religion; as a state system where the law & police work impartially. In none of these categories can we hold our head high.”

Several other comedians including Varun Grover, Vir Das, Kaneez Surkha, Agrima Joshua, and Rohan Joshi stand in solidarity with Faruqui.

One of the audience members identified as Jenosha Agnes shared on her Instagram, “As Munawar arrived on the stage, few people with political connections rushed to the stage, snatched the mic and began saying ‘hamare religious sentiments hurt hue hai… Godhra kand per joke kiya… Hamare Devi devta ka mazak udaya… Islam pe joke q nahi karta hai…… No derogatory remarks were made by Munawar Faruqui at the Indore show.”
