The Worst Person in the World -Best Film at Cannes

Anders Danielsen Lie, Renate Reinsve and Director Joachim Trier of the film 'The Worst Person In The World' pose for a portrait at the Deadline Portrait Studio during the Cannes Film Festival on July 8, 2021 in Cannes, France.

The Cannes film festival has fallen head over heels for a Norwegian film about a young woman trying to find herself and the unknown actress who plays her.

Renate Reinsve “takes off like a rocket and deserves star status to rival Lily James or Alicia Vikander,” he added, giving ‘The Worst Person within the World’ a five-star evaluate — one in all a number of it has already garnered.

In her first big-screen lead, Reinsve performs a twenty-something attempting and failing to outline herself by way of her pinballing relationships with males till she lastly strikes out on her personal path.

In the film, Reinsve plays Julie, a spirited 30-year-old who has everything going for her. But she’s also experiencing growing disenchantment with a long-time serious boyfriend (Lie). At loose ends, Julie aimlessly wanders around the city on a beautiful summer evening and quietly crashes a wedding party in full progress. Encountering Eivind (Herbert Nordrum), they start flirting in funny intoxicated ways. But the good times begin to wane and with the passing of time and opportunities comes a sense of missed chances and mistakes resulting in a potent melancholy.

“The Worst Person in the World” is one of 24 films competing for Cannes top prize, the Palme d’Or, which will be awarded next Saturday. The film’s reflective final few chapters swing for the fences, its ruminations on grief are moving and there is a brave, challenging rebuke to the notion that a childless woman should feel unfulfilled. An opening quirky comedy routines give way to something much richer––a startlingly observant, sharp, romantic, provocative, and poignant view of millennial culture and how life comes at you fast.
