Dalit Youth alleged 4 people of a high caste of assault and harassment.

4 men were booked in the Pudukkotai district of Tamil Nadu for assaulting and harassing a Dalit youth. The Dalit complained against the 4 men for beating and using caste-based abuses on him at the Meemisal police station in Pudukkotai district.

According to the police, the Dalit teen had gone fishing a nearby pond with his few family members. The teenager belonged to Gunpathiranpatti. While returning their bike’s tire punctured, and after they got it repaired they stopped at a local shop to eat.

While the group from Gunpathiranpatti was having their meal a man named Pradeep and his brother Moorthy from the Thanikondan village came to them and started inquiring about their village and asked for caste.

As per the complaint lodged Pradeep used insulting remarks for the boy and his fellows’ caste. Pradeep even questioned how these people dared to ride a bike in front of them as he was of higher caste, and they belong to lower caste.

The matter later became more complicated as Pradeep, his brother, Moorthy and his couple of friends beat the Dalit boy and his fellows. The attackers forced alcohol on the victim and even urinated on him

The victim somehow ran away from there and got admitted to Aranthangi Government Hospital and later lodged a complaint in the Meemisal police station.

Pradeep, Moorthy, and two other unidentified people are booked under sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 365 (abduction) 294 (b) obscene act to insult, 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 506 (II) (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, as well as the SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Amendment Act, 2015.

The police are further investigating the matter and believe that the incident could be pre-planned to distract the authorities from the illegal sand mining in the area.
